Ashé Cultural Tours was founded in 2017 by Ken Schweitzer, a music professor at a small Liberal Arts College in Maryland. Initially drawn to Cuba in 1999 to experience first-hand its unparalleled and vibrant music scene, Schweitzer returns annually to continue learning more about the unique musical, the cultural, and political landscape of this Caribbean island nation.
Beginning in 2014, Schweitzer partnered with anthropologist, Aaron Lampman, to organize educational and people-to-people tours. Rather than engage our clients as traditional “tour guides,” we offer something much more valuable! By sharing our knowledge of Cuban culture, and by carefully designing both structured and unstructured activities, we provide the opportunity for clients to get an insider’s view of music, art, culture, and even politics. Our group will be lodged Havana in beautiful “guest rooms” that are sanctioned in the homes of working class Cubans located five blocks from the tourist district and one block from the iconic malecón, the ocean-side pedestrian boulevard. In Trinidad, we will stay in homes with beautiful vistas of the nearby mountains and ocean. Many of the meals provided are 100% Cuban home-cooked meals. To learn more about meals in visit the FAQ.
